TRACK1
This track is being performed in a large football stadium and includes a lot of instruments. There are a large horn section including trombones, saxophones and trumpets. There is a large percussion sound as well including marching snare drums and cymbals. There must be over 100 parts to this band that make up this great sound. There is a long reverb time in this stadium because the walls are far apart and the large space creates a lot of room for the sound to reflect and bounce around. The sound of the reverb would be longer when the stadium if empty as all the crowds of people will absorb a lot of the sound and prevent the sound from reflecting and bouncing off the walls.
I think this type of genre of music is very appropriate from this style of music. The football stadium gives the large brass and drum sound a nice natural reverb for all the parts to ring together.
This polyphonic texture is made up of lots and lots of different sounds and dynamics. The environment that band are playing needs to be large like a football stadium because there are so many people playing. You would struggle to perform this type of music in a recording studio or on a stage.
As the camera moves around the instruments that is is nearer become louder and the entire sound changes. When it is near the horns you hear the bigger sound of the entire band but when its the percussion playing you can hear the size of the stadium ringing. This is because the big drums and marching snare cracks travel far and fast and will rebound of any surfaces in they stadium and return with a large reverb sound. This is very important to consider when performing in a band of this size because the space that you are playing in will almost always give you this type of reverb. I think for this type of band this is the sound you expect and would probably want because it fill in all the gaps with a lovely reverb sound that gels the whole band together. As the texture changes from all the band playing to just a solo drummer the reverb sound changes and the size of the stadium because very prominent in the mix.
TRACK 2
This piece contains voices 5 male and 2 female. 2 of the males are positioned the other side of the room. This is being performed in a large church or cathedral. This choir genre of music is very appropriately performed in a cathedral because the voices are very loud and powerful by the reflective surfaces on the cathedral help the voices to travel and contain more amplitude. This homophonic sound is gelled together by the large reverb which helps the voices to sing together. The reverb time is very long probably about a second but because the microphones that are picking them up are capturing sound from close the the source you don't get to hear to much of the reverb as you would of you were there in the room listening.
The shapes and patterns in the architecture on the cathedral give the reverb some strange effects. The stone and the large dense surfaces reflect the sound a lot and give off a large reverb that will bounce around the whole room making the 7 singers sound much louder that they actually are.
TRACK 3
This 3rd track is being performed by a band in a fairly small acoustic performance space. There are 4 voices. Guitar, Vocals and 2 keyboard sounds. The vocals and guitars are not close mic'd which they have done on purpose to make the most of the reverb and capture the band as a whole rather than each instrument played and captured in its own way. The performance is all about the band together and how this polyphonic sound is brought together by the performers. The reverb time in this space is very small but they have placed the microphones away from the instruments to capture some reverb. The room is fairly small but there is a whole audience that are watching and the sound is going have some space to bounce around. This is the only performance out of the 3 that are in a controlled environment. The reverb time on this performance is much less than the others.
