'What Now'

On Saturday 7th
September ‘Farmily Fest’ brought a whole afternoon and evening of live music to
the huge fields of Tully’s Farm. Headliner act ‘Red Box’ came back from the
80’s to fill the air with fantastic rock music from the incredible decade that
it was. As the sun came down the small stage was filled by ‘Kerrang’ award
winning, 3 piece ‘What Now’ all the way from South Africa where they will begin
their 3rd national tour on the 17th of this month.
The band is made up of Tyrone Layley on drums, Ryan Morris
on lead guitar and Adam Jenkins on bass and lead vocals. Many of the songs contained
a backing track, pre recorded intro which filled the stage before the whole
band kicked in. Songs such as ‘If looks could kill’ and ‘Move like a sinner’
featured in the set which are on the bands newest release ‘Move like a Sinner’.
The band’s incredible stage presents was a joy to watch as
they jumped around the 20 ft stage like monkeys. The big guitar sounds and
heavy bass lines accompanied the lyrics really nicely while a complex and tight
drum beat held the music together. All three members were very tight and well
rehearsed which you could tell, although the first three songs were new and you
could tell they were just getting used to playing them in a live situation. You
could also see each member was being very free with what they played; adding
small licks and fills where they could to add to the big live sound which they
were creating. The band wore skinny jeans and thin leather jackets which helped
create the mood and vibe that the band as a whole was trying to make and show
off through the music that they were playing.
I didn’t like how some of the more challenging vocal notes
weren’t being hit by Adam but the way they used Adam and Ryan to distribute
lead vocals throughout the set gave the performance dynamics and texture to
create the ‘Whats Now’ sound.
A very talented live band. I would probably pay to see them
again, maybe not fly out to South Africa but on their next tour in the UK.
